One of the most important assignments for those of us who work in the water and wastewater department is to make sure Borås inhabitants get clean, fresh, pleasant-tasting, healthy drinking water. Sjöbo is the biggest water purification plant in Borås. Fristad, Viskafors, Borgstena, Kinnarumma, Svaneholm, Sjömarken, Sandared and Sandhult all get their drinking water from it. There are also a number of smaller purification plants that supply other districts. Drinking water is pumped from water purification plants via mains and pressure boosting stations to consumers. Most of the water is used in households, but industries, schools and healthcare establishments also need a great deal of water for their operations. Drinking water is an essential amenity and standards for its production and quality are laid down in the National Food Administration´s regulations on drinking water. All water treatment plants must be approved by the Environmental Office, the authority that inspects their operations. The water and wastewater department carries out internal checks in order to ensure that all legislation and regulations are followed and that drinking water is healthy. These checks comprise both preventive measures and test sampling to monitor water quality.
